To all who mourn in Israel, He will give a crown of beauty for ashes, a joyous blessing instead of mourning, festive praise instead of despair. In their righteousness, they will be like great oaks that the LORD has planted for his own glory. Isaiah 61:3

1920s Hair Bandeau Fun!

Today when I awoke, my hair was a riot of curls...going to bed with a wet head tends to do that in my case...so I chose to take advantage of my curly hair.  I broke out the curling iron and curled the top and back of my hair and smoothed out the side "wings" that flip foward.  Then I dug out my fabulous (if sadly shattering) wide antique, silk floral ribbon and fashioned it into a 1920s hair bandeau!  After making sure it looked good over my fore head, I tied it into a bow in the back and began to position the curls over the ribbon in the fashion of photographs from the 1920s...those ladies were so beautiful with their scarf and ribbon bandeaus!  Then of course I had to take pictures and play with said pictures to get the affect of the photographs from back then!  The vintage images below can be seen here:

I love this hand tinted photograph!  The bandeau reminds me of mine!

Fun twisted bandeau!
I had a little bit too much fun playing with the photo editing program!  I chose a "tinted", black and white, and sepia toned image to share!  I can't wait for the opportunity to wear my hair bandeau style!  It will be great fun!

Now it is time to get back to folding laundry and getting dinner ready!  I hope you all have a fabulous week my lovely friend!

Blessings!

Channeling Ruth Dewitt Bukater

Last Friday my costuming group got to attend a Titanic Dinner at Sunnyridge Retirement Center as ghosts!  It was a wonderful experience as not only did we get to dress up in our Titanic best and visit with the residence, but we got to partake of the most delicious dinner as well!  OHMYGOSH was is delicious!  The cook at Sunnyridge chose several of the dishes that were served for the last dinner on the Titanic!  Oh to have not worn my corset!!  hahahahaha!!!

For the evening, I was finally able to wear my Black and Ivory Dinner Dress (seen here Titanic Dinner Dress) and some fabulous jewelry that I found on the Ebay store Seperwar.  The inspiration for my hair was of course Ruth Dewitt Bukater.  I loved her hair through the whole movie!  I curled the front sections of my hair and then ratted the heck out of it.  My natural  wave took up the bulk in the back.  Then I added my hair piece to the back for that 1912 pouf!  The Bird of Paradise hair piece was inspired by Molly Brown's hair piece that she wore to dinner.  It is faaaabulous!!!  And as happiness would have it, I had a star brooch to anchor the feathers!

Below are images of my hair...there are a lot and I apologize for that, but I was seriously happy with how it turned out!  I am not one who can "do" hair dos well, so when the hair looks good, I need to capture it so that I can say on a bad hair day, "Yes!  But did you see my hair for the Titanic Event???  It totally rocked!!!"

For some reason when I look at this last "hair" picture, it reminds me of Empress Alexandra of Russia....she always looked so melancholy and my expression in this picture looks very much the same!

Ruth Dewitt Bukater's wonderful coiffure for the last dinner on the Titanic....I love how puffy and curly her hair was!!  Fabulous job hair people!!!

Molly Brown and her fabulous Bird of Paradise feathers for the last dinner on the Titanic....delightful!

The We Wear History ghosts!  I do believe we make quite the wonderful looking group!  My beautiful friend Tammy, my handsome son Colton, Greg my fabulous husband, my handsome son Cody the birthday boy...(Yes, folks, he spent his Birthday evening at a Titanic Event!) and my beautiful Mama Lana!

Aubrielle Holly and Gina White as Rose Dewitt Bukater and her domineering mother Ruth Dewitt Bukater.

My most fabulous husband and myself!  I love that he dresses up and attends events with me!

My fabulous friend Tammy, my incredible Mama and me making sure we survive the sinking!

I cannot wait for the next Titanic event which I believe will be in May!  So, because I have worn my black and ivory dress, I need to make another dinner gown right?  I might have to make Ruth's dinner gown....it is so fabulous!!

Blessings!

1863 Hair Style!

Yesterday was The Museum Comes To Life day at the Idaho State Historical Museum and our group, We Wear History attended in style!  I was finally able to wear my 1863 semi sheer Damask Rose Dress and wire frame bonnet!!!  Yeah!!!  I was thrilled with how it all came together and the look it effected!!  But first I had to "do" my hair in an 1863 style.  Never having worn a bonnet from the 1860s, I had to do this right.  What I mean by this statement is...I have so much hair, long and thick, I couldn't simply put it in a bun at the back of my hair and make do.  Tried that and my bonnet stuck waaaay out and off my head!  Also, I like to really look as original and authentic as I can with my dressing.

Mom and I stayed up until 3 the night before working on her dress and when I finally fell into bed, my mind would not shut down.  It absolutely refused to shut down!  I hate that!!!  So, instead of just laying in bed thinking and worrying, I researched 1860s hair styles and found two fabulous tutorials on YouTube....

Watching both of these filled me with the confidence I needed to manage a proper hairstyle that would both look good and would wear nicely under my bonnet!!!

Of course I would get the center part off center....Just like me!!  Off Center!!

Not too shabby for the first time out!!  Next time, I'll attempt to tame the natural wave out of the back by the part....

All in all I was very happy with how the hairstyle turned out and it looked great under my bonnet!!!  Thank you ladies for sharing your tutorials!  You saved my hair!!

Blessings!

YOUCH!!! I Got Wheat Down My Bra!!!!

And let me tell you what...it is R-U-D-E RUDE!!!!  But let me tell you why I got wheat down my bra.  For my Demeter dress I wanted to make a wheat hair piece like below....

I ordered some wonderful antique linen faux wheat from ebay but they hadn't been delivered before the day before I was to leave for Spokane.  Why was that important?  Because I was going to be wearing my Demeter dress to Maniteau Park for a photo shoot and I needed to make the hair piece to complete the outfit.  So, I did what any crazed costumer in my situation would do!  I went and picked real wheat from a harvested field!  Where I live, after the farmers harvest the fields, what is left of the wheat can be gleaned, and that is just what I did!  I went to the wheat field around the corner from my house and picked a bunch of wheat.  Now, if you decide to do this crazy thing, take scissors!!!  Never having had any knowledge of wheat besides using it in baking or eating it in bread, I did not know that it is rude!!!  There I was merrily picking my wheat when I looked down and saw blood dripping from my middle finger!  The wheat had cut me!!!  Grrrrrrrrrrrr.....luckily I didn't get any blood on my wheat stalks....

Right then....here is what I assembled for the construction of my wheat wreath.  A headband, thin brass wire,  (I used my scrapbooking wire), my wheat, poppies because that was one of Demeter's symbols, and scissors.  Oh yah...and green florist's tape.

I made small circles of wire that I taped to the ends of the headband.  These would be used to thread bobby pins through to pin in my hair so the wreath would stay put.

Now of course I didn't take any pictures of the adding of the wheat, but I basically started with three ears of wheat (are they ears?) well, three stalks of wheat.  Extending the middle ear a good 2" inches past the end of the head band, I began wiring the wheat to the headband, staggering the wheat as I wired.  After five ears of wheat I added one of the poppies.  I wired on 14 wheat heads to the headband.  In the middle, I left about a 4" space.  This didn't need any wheat as this was where my hair would be pulled over the headband to cover the tape and because that is the look I was going for.  Then over that I added my large curled hair piece.  (Images of this will be in my next post....)

Completed hair piece...

Side...here you can see the staggered affect of the wheat.  I like how spastic it looks!!  I only had four poppies so had to space them accordingly.

Here you can really see the placement of the wheat.  Left, right, and down the middle.  Also, I had straight and curved wheat ears.  Made for a very interesting look.

Here you can see the middle of the wreath where it is just florist's tape.

Oh yah!  I almost forgot.  How did that wheat got down my bra?  Well, when I was fooling around with the wreath, seeing what it would look like in my hair, I was wearing a spaghetti strap tank top.  Wheat is not a fake silk flower.  It is an organic one prone to breakage, and that breakage is victim to gravity.  From the head, things tend to fall downward, and downward from my head was my bosom which at the time was not fully protected from the evil that is wheat chaff!  So, ladies, if you plan on making one of these hair pieces, I STRONGLY suggest you wear a T-shirt or a button up shirt, or armor.  Seriously.

Switches Can Be A Good Thing!

But only if you are referring to the kind of switches/rats that ladies of the Edwardian Era used to make their hair look fabulous!  Years ago, I attempted to make my own switch with a pair of pantyhose...yes, new ones...and some batting.  Well, let's just say that experience was an epic fail.  I don't know if I had too much of my own hair or if the switch was HUGE, but it just was not a happy thing.  Well, my friend Josie just came back from The Costumer's Lost Weekend in Dallas and attended the Big Edwardian Hair class.  Pictures of this class are posted on flickr and after looking at them, I had a
"ohmygoshIamsogoingtotrythisbecauseitlookssoradicallyawesomeandIamsoexcitedtogiveitatryagainohmygoshohmygoshOHMYGOSH!!!!" moment
Translation, "Ohmygosh!  I am so going to try this because it looks so radically awesome and I am so excited to give it a try again!  Ohmygosh!  Ohmygosh!  OHMYGOSH!!!"
Needless to say, I was so excited to try this that my rat/switch was just kind of whipped together without regard to neatness.  I used my extra hair that I had left over from making my curled hair piece and two brand new nylon knee highs.  I tied the ends of the stockings together and used safety pins to connect the toe ends.  Not period correct, but that's ok.  Hopefully no one will see the pins under my hair!  Here is the link to flickr...

Just follow the photos to the right to get the full effect of how to make this chignon!  So totally awesome!
