To all who mourn in Israel, He will give a crown of beauty for ashes, a joyous blessing instead of mourning, festive praise instead of despair. In their righteousness, they will be like great oaks that the LORD has planted for his own glory. Isaiah 61:3

1930s Fall Suit Complete!!! Laaaaaaa!!!

And....I think I like it!!  That is to say, after I moved the sleeves up to where they were supposed to be so I didn't look like I was wearing my big sister's jacket and I brought in the side seams at the hem so they didn't "ruffle" out, I like it!  Now that all the things are the way they are supposed to be, I do believe this shall be fun!!

Emma actually looks good wearing this outfit!!  This era doesn't need the curves and fluff like the eras in the past did, so her skinny frame wears this era well!

I added a sweet bow at the neck of the blouse for added girl-y interest.

These pockets are fun, but oh so bulky as the wool fabric is rather thick, which is THE reason I chose to not line this jacket.

Everything that I made and will wear is from my stash!  The only thing I purchased was the bias tape I used to hem the skirt!  Huzzah for stash busting!!

Seriously AWESOME buttons I found once again, in my Great-Grandma Cornelia's sewing machine cabinet!!  Aren't they FAAAABULOUS!!!!!!???

And yep...this buckle came from the drawer as well!  It is a wonderful light color that I felt brought out the pale stripes in the fabric of the cotton skirt that I also used for the belt for the jacket.

Accessories

As this is a new era to me, I don't know if the accessories did the "matchy-matchy" thing that the previous eras sometimes did, so for this outfit I am going to use my brown earth tone accessories.  I kinda have a feeling that since the depression was still in the very fresh memories of ladies from the mid 1930s, they would perhaps have just worn what they had on hand or did what I did, make do with what you have!

Not sure about the era of this pin but I know it is very old, My Great-Grandma Nonni gave it to me years ago from her jewelry box when I was a little girl.  The warm gold color is a perfect accent for the burnt orange of the jacket.  It originally had seed pearls that have long since come off, so I will have to see if I can find any somewhere!

These wonderfully sweet gloves were given to me by my Big Sis, Marilyn.  She surprised me with them by hiding them in a basket that she had borrowed to wear with an outfit for one of our We Wear Idaho History outings!  They look great with the outfit!  Thank you Sis!!

Lace up shoes are from a thrift store.  Not the perfect ones for this era, but again, they will do!!

This vintage purse also came from a thrift store.  I think it is so fun!

Ok, so I am not sure if straw hats were worn in the Fall, but I love the shape of this!  It started out as a modern Panama-ish hat.  One day I was looking through my hats for ones that I thought would work well for the early to mid 1930s and the shape of this one looked correct.  I lowered the brim about 2.5" and voila!!!  1930s hat!!!

The ribbon has been in my stash for YEARS!!!!

I have had some vintage hat trims collecting dust in my millinery bins and am so happy that now I have a chance to use them!!  I think this thing-a-ma-bob is super cool!  Not sure if it is an stylized wheat bunch or what, but it will be worn with my new outfit!!

Well, it is snowing today and my Mom is snuggled up at home and I don't really want to tackle 30s hair and make-up, so my first vintage photo shoot will have to wait for nicer weather.  In Idaho, that may be in 2 hours or 2 weeks!!  Bwahahahahaha!!!

Have a most wonderful day and for those in the United States of America a Blessed Thanksgiving!!

  1. Snow?!? It boggles the mind. It was in the 70s here but just a couple days ago we did get a hard frost that blackened the last of the garden. This outfit is so very smart looking. I love the hat. Wool and plaid - ahhhhhh perfection. Happy Thanksgiving my friend! Lookin good!

  4. Thank you so much Esther! I am really happy with how it turned out! I used Retro Butterick 6329. The sleeves really needed to be taken in and the shoulders had to be cut up, but other than that there was very little alteration!
    Blessings!
