To all who mourn in Israel, He will give a crown of beauty for ashes, a joyous blessing instead of mourning, festive praise instead of despair. In their righteousness, they will be like great oaks that the LORD has planted for his own glory. Isaiah 61:3

Purple, Black and Ivory 1912 Dress Complete!

I got my purple dress done about a week before I started on my pink 1912 suit/dress and took pictures of it.  Then life got crazy and I totally forgot to post photos of the dress and my hat.  Soooooo...out of order, here is the completed purple dress and the fabulous extant horsehair and straw hat that my Mom and I found in Spokane, WA.

I do need to make a dickey so that my neck won't be bare....

Really awesome shoes I found at a Retro shop in Boise...LOOOOOOVE those buttons!

I never appreciated the black velvet bow until I started working on this dress.  Now I see that it was meant to be!

The detailing of the straw braid, knots and horsehair medallions is truly phenominal!

The flowers are lilac and alstromeria.

And the brim is HUGE!!  I believe it is either 22" or 24" across...I measured it once but have since forgot

The only thing missing is the lining...other than that it is in almost perfect condition.  There is a bit of breaking on the crown....so from now on it will be handled with more care than before!

I cannot wait to wear this outfit.  Now I have to decide what color gloves to wear with it!  Black or off white....hhhhhmmmmmm....

Blessings!

  3. A beautiful ensemble! I'd love to see some pictures of you, wearing it. I love the colour and love the pink dress too. I always decide not to sew something with these colours, because my hair is red too. But you show me that red haired can wear pink. Perhaps I should try it.

    1. Oh yes Thalia!! Wear pink! I have found that it is the shade of pink that depends on wether or not I can wear it. There are still some that look ghastly on me...but the right shade? I'm so wearing it!! Please consider it! It is such a great color. Thank you so much for your lovely compliment! I will be wearing this dress in a couple of months and will take photos then!

  4. If we were the same size, I'd be heading up there now and stealing this off your back! I love the white trim down the side.
My dreamed of Downton Abbey wardrobe has not magically appeared yet, and if I didn't have an 1840s or 1910 mourning dress on my planning board, I'd be tempted to start on it now. Squirrel Alert!

You should pick upwhite gloves - the black one are (for me) the funeral ones. After your dresses, hats, Eleonora's dresses I've started watching Downton Abbey and i'm dreaming about dresses. And dreaming ... and dreaming ... ;) And planning! ;)
Bot here and now I adore your work!
