Good Wednesday to you all! I hope your week is moving along swimmingly! Mine is a crazy, stressful week of getting all the things ready for a fashion show at Something Special Antiques in Meridian and getting Colton ready for the new school year at a new school. I can't wait until Sunday!
I thought I'd write a quick post about the completed riding habit I made for the Women in Sports section of the fashion show. While this isn't my all time, #1, oh-my-giddy-aunt outfit that I have ever made, I am pleased with how it turned out and feel that it is very elegant in its simplicity. And this one I won't be selling!!
Here she is on Emma the Mannequin and may I just say that Emma needs to gain some weight! Poor thing! She is wasting away to practically nothing! Oh! And you can't see in the pictures here, but there are riding trousers under the skirt! Huzzah!
Inspiration for my riding habit came from this one from The MET. I like the way the hem of the bodice comes up more towards the waist. I was using this one originally, but didn't like how the bodice fit me with the hem that low...so I cut up the hem and really liked how it looked!
Will be doing a photo shoot with me wearing this in the future. One of my fellow bloggers and readers has quite generously offered her horse as a "prop" for a photo shoot! How fabulous is that!? I think that will be my most epic "prop" ever in the history of this blog!

Well, she's done. And I am so happy!!! It is so fluffy and ruffly and girly!! In the words of Agnes of "Despicable Me"...."It's so fluffy I'm gonna die!!!!"
I can honestly say, this is the most involved, expensive, complicated, time-consuming, satisfying project I have ever subjected myself to and I am so happy, truly thrilled it's complete! All that is left is to iron all the underwear, pack up the wedding artifacts, write a few things out, visit with my fabulous Mother-in-law, Pam (who is almost here) and take it easy!!!
If you didn't see my earlier post, pop on over and take a look see, you will witness me having an utter cow over my silk getting here. Before today, the ruffly fluffiness was very incomplete...like only 25% was done, so it was with sheer, giddy delight (and some screaming for the whole neighborhood to hear) that the package was happily lying in my mail box this afternoon!

Hello all! I hope your weekend has started out wonderfully! So far, mine has been quite nice. My incredible husband chose "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" for our movie tonight and I thought it was quite fun!
Earlier today I did my hair (it was most uncooperative indeed!!!), put my pretty Wedding frillies on and asked Colton to shoot away! This post is super photo heavy because I decided I wanted to wait and photo all the underthings at the same time. It is such a shame that most of the time, Victorian underwear wasn't seen by a lot of people. It was just so gorgeous! I had a lot of fun making these pieces of underwear. They were a lot of work, but I think that work totally paid off!
Garter Belt
Sadly, today I wasn't wearing any American Duchess clocked silk stockings (I still need to purchase some) so I "couldn't" wear my belt. Besides, if I was wearing it, I wouldn't have been able to have had photos taken of the belt!
It was very interesting to make as there really wasn't a pattern for it. For the actual belt part, I used the yoke section of Folkwear Edwardian Underthings 203. The garters I had to guess on. Inspiration for the bows came from here and here. Lara Greene-Vaught of Lara Corsets supplied the hardware, I found the fabulous French Embroidered ribbon at French Kiss Ribbons on Etsy, and the silk for the belt part was left over from mom's blue corset!

More inspiration I found in my August 1893 edition of The Delineator! I am 99.9% sure these were worn under the drawers. At least that's how I will be wearing mine!
French Drawers
The antique bow lace I found screamed to be used on some French drawers. Sadly, the pictures don't show the awesome flounce...

French Petticoat-Chemise
Another item from the 1898 Delineator was a French petticoat-chemise. These were an extra layer of petticoat used to hold the skirts of the 1890s dresses "out"! Love how long this one is. I extended Truly Victorian TVE02 Edwardian Underwear chemise pattern. The same bow insertion lace was used on the bodice and the hem.

Description in the Delineator for image "8":
"At figure No. 8 is shown a French petticoat-chemise made of fine nainsook and trimmed with insertion and edging, ribbon-run beading covering the joinings. A very shallow yoke at the top has fullness at the center of the back and front like the lower portion of the chemise, which may hang loose or be confined in Empire style by a belt. A flounce completes the lower edge of the chemise."
Pretty deep ribbon lace flounce looks beautiful with my FAAAAAAAABULOUS American Duchess shoes! I LOVE these and am so happy that I was able to get some!
Brocade Corset
I wanted bust and hip gores for my corset and since I LOVED how my 1840s corset turned out, I decided to go ahead and use Simplicity 7215. For the trim around the top, I trimmed some of the bow lace. It turned out really sweet!
Petticoats

I had enough antique lace that I decided to make an under petticoat to go with the over petticoat that I purchased off of eBay.
I know that I got inspiration for this somewhere, but cannot find it anywhere now! When I remember, I'll post a link!
Every single panel between the insertion lace took me 1 hour to complete! All those tucks...pain in the neck. Seriously! But it turned out perfectly puffy, which is what I was shooting for!
Over petticoat
I found this lovely on eBay. It is GORGEOUS and was the whole reason all the rest of the underwear ended up the way it did! It makes me so happy! I had to cut the waist down about 3 inches however because the original owner was about 10 feet tall! Just kidding...she was probably only 5' 10". Tall lady!
Delicious, frothy goodness!
"The petticoat has a deep full flounce that gives the proper flare to the skirt and is trimmed with deep embroidered edging." Delineator, August 1898.
Mine has strips of batiste between the insertion lace, a batiste flounce then a deep lace flounce. Under the outer flounce is another row or ruffle with a flounce. It is the most beautiful petticoat I have ever seen!
Corset Cover
I fell in love with this corset cover from The MET, so used it as inspiration for my corset cover. Of course I had to put insertion lace in mine!
I LOVE this lace. I am hoping that somewhere, sometime I will find a whole bunch more!

The Cover of the awesome sauce Delineator that helped me with my underwear. There are some pretty spectacular color fashion plates in it, one of which is inspiration for Mom's Mother of the Bride dress I will be making!
Now that the underwear is done for the Dressing The Victorian Bride program, I now have to start on the actual wedding dress. I am excited and dreading it at the same time... Bring on the ivory silk!!!!

Well, graduation week is over and I survived!!! Hallelujah!!! I can't tell you how proud I am of my son. He is so brilliant and bright and loving and compassionate and kind and funny and all the good things! It was a great honor and blessing to watch him partake in the ceremony and then to listen to his speech. He left his dad and me in tears. I never knew he felt these things for me, his mom, and as he spoke them, my heart grew to bursting (yes, I was wearing waterproof make-up...). Then to watch this adult child of mine interact with other adults...I wish you could feel what I felt. Like, WOW! This child we raised, he is a GOOD person! I don't know if it is because of our raising him or in spite of raising him, but ya, he's awesome. And there is of course all of God to thank for this person. He gifted us with Cody, He gave us the patience, understanding and help to raise him. He has drawn Cody to Himself and has made him a great Man of God. I can't wait to see where his life takes him after this, his first step into the great unknown! My mom says, "Your kids are always your kids" and I totally understand more and more of what that meaning is. We just have to place our child into the hands of God and trust that He knows best how to lead Cody. I have some images of the evening below. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!
Because I had mom's camera at my house, left over from Cody's graduation and party, I decided that today would be the day to do the photo shoot of the fencing outfit. I did my hair (something I generally do not go out of my way to do) and Colton snapped away. I think he did a wonderful job!
I have decided to start a YouTube channel for Beauty From Ashes. My hope and goal is to do a video every time I write a new blog post. I am always wondering what the people whose blogs I read sound like and how they act. Are they really as funny as their blogs make them out to be? So, in case anyone who reads my blog is like me, you get to hear how dorky I sound! hahahahaha!!!

I used Laughing Moon 110, Ladies 1890s Sporting Costumes pattern. The bloomers are made of lightweight wool and the top is made of cotton canvas. For the buttons I used antique bone buttons. Another inspiration was a fencing jacket from The MET.
I used many images from my Pinterest board Sports: Fencing as inspiration for the poses above. Unfortunately, I didn't have any place that was suited for taking the fencing poses, so I tacked dupioni silk to my wall and used that for a back drop. I think it worked rather well, but it wasn't wide enough to get really good pictures of some of the poses...
Me, fencing a fence. I literally got the idea to do this while Colton was filming me for my first ever YouTube video. Why hadn't I thought of it before I had downloaded all the pictures the first time?

My Fabulous Graduate!!!
Again, this was the most wonderful weekend. I so appreciate everyone who came to support and love on my son! He is my favorite 18 year old in the whole wide world, and I thank God every day that he was given to Greg and me!!!
Many times I have watched other parents of graduates and have wondered what it felt like to feel their joy and happiness. Thursday evening, I knew exactly what that felt like! It was surreal to see this kid who is mine (I'm so not old enough to have a child this old!!!) graduating and taking another step into adulthood. I wish I could bottle that feeling and take it out every once in a while and just savor it!

Us four with my Mama and Daddy, Lana and Ray! They have been HUGE supporters of Cody and love him without measure! My Dad taught Cody to shoot and takes him hunting every year. My Mom takes the time to listen to his heart and is such a great Nana! They both gently and lovingly give grand-parental guidance to him. I know he takes their wisdom and life lessons to heart!
With my incredible Mother-in-Law Pam. She loves on Cody from far away and flew to town just for his graduation. She is another great supporter of my Cody! She takes time out just for him to have great conversations and gently lends her own guidance. She can't wait to move her to be closer to him and the other grandchildren!

He gave the best speech. Yes, he is my son and yes, I can be biased. But he was eloquent, even, didn't waver and spoke his heart. I was not only touched and blessed, but seriously impressed!
